As all experienced search engine optimization hands know, typoed versions of search terms account for a considerable amount of traffic. While optimizing pages for typos is just as demanding a chore as the regular variety, competition is generally less fierce. Hence, everyone involved in search engine marketing should at least include the most common typos in their optimization efforts.

The question is: which typos to choose? After all, there's an unlimited scope for misspelling words and optimizing for all of them could easily turn into a nightmare. So some discretion is in order here. For one, you can simply work from your own most common typos. Watch your typing behavior and make a note of the typing mistakes you make. This will go a long way to include typos based on slipped keys (e.g. "t" and "y" on an English or American, "t" and "z" on a German keyboard, etc.). For example, "flux" will frequently be entered as "lfux" or even "f1ux", whereas "real estate" may give you "real estaet", "real etate" or even "real state".

Also make note of common ommissions (e.g. "serch" or "searc" instead of "search", "sorts" for "sports", etc.) and double typing ("ssnake", "blisss", etc.). More difficult to figure out are misspelled versions due to users' simple ignorance. Terms like "weird" and "wierd" come to mind, as do "friend" and "freind", "yours" and "your's", "mansion" and "manson", etc.) There's even an online database available featuring millions of typos: < http://www.searchspell.com >

If you're looking for typoed domain names of the "tahoo.com" for "yahoo.com" variety for own registration, try out this neat tool: < http://216.147.23.70/cgi-bin/typo.cgi?domain=yahoo.com >

It doesn't come with a user interface so you'll have to enter the name you're researching after the "domain=" string in your browser address field. (Incidentally, it even works without domain extensions.)
