How to build a high traffic website by doing some work.
The trouble with this type of approach is that once the list has been hit three or four times promoting w,x,y and z your target becomes wise to the idea that he or she is being sold to and unsubscribes - gone forever. Not a problem though as there are many more prepared to subscribe to the dream. In my newsletter I describe tried and trusted techniques for making money from websites. There are no secrets. It's just plain spadework to achieve the end result. I wouldn't even call this "hard work" It's not hard work. Sure you may have to add some PHP and MYSQL knowledge to your armoury to be able to do some of the more advanced stuff. But installing PHPNuke IS NOT difficult and the satisfaction gained from learning how to do it and not relying on some "guru" far outweighs spending your next 200 $/£ on some great money making system that you will read once and never read again.
Liken it to learning a language - Are you the type to go and buy the full box set CD with all good intentions of mastering French and never get past the first CD - then it goes in the attic gathering dust? Or the type to take a two week holiday in the south of france and vow not to speak a word of English. In two weeks you will be semi fluent and well on your way to mastering the language.
So to my point. Building a five or six page website and then struggling to achieve top rankings for your keywords is not going to cut the mustard. You can use webposition gold to help - and it's a great tool, but this alone will not make you the traffic you need to build a successful site. You will end up frustrated and embittered with this approach - the competition for top rankings is just too intense.
It doesn't matter which of the strategies you follow in the newsletter series, simple, intermediate or advanced. The principle is the same in all methods. Build a page a day and in six months time you will have a successful website. Search engines are looking for content. If you don't have any content then you are going to struggle. You have to have content - and plenty of it. Look at building a TWO hundred page website. That's right - two hundred pages of content, not including spurious "about us" and "contact us" pages. Do some basic keyword research but after that don't worry about keywords. If you are sticking to your main topic then the keywords will flow automatically. Build a page a day and search engine traffic will flow like an oil gush.
Building a page a day requires some effort, and some self discipline, but more than that it releases you from the tedium of sweating over page titles, descriptions, page headings etc. You just add a page and the search engine will index it. You will be amazed at how much traffic can flow from these pages and very often it is from people looking for something similar to your offering that they can't find anywhere else - and that should be your inspiration to take your site to the next stage - making some serious cash. You can't make money without traffic. It's a chicken and egg with a definite answer, in this case the traffic came first.
This is why I advocate picking a topic for your site that you have some enthusiasm for, it's much easier to write stuff and find articles for a topic you are interested in than it is to get motivated for something that you don't really enjoy. Obvious really, but too often overlooked. So how do you plan your approach?
I give this type of information away in my newsletter - so if you haven't registered yet (it's free) then that's your next step. However to give you a flavour of what's to come here's something to think about.
What type of information can you most often NOT FIND when you are looking for something? Answer? EVENT information.
Think of all of the upcoming events in 2004. Film releases, concerts, sports events etc. Do a search and see what information you can find on these events. Pick a subject that you like the look of - say it's a big film release in October 2004. By starting your site today you are guaranteeing an almost exclusive target audience. Anyone that has the same idea in October is way off the pace - it will take months for their site to be registered on all of the search engines that matter and by the time that has happened interest in the subject has cooled off.
When you think about it you can apply this strategy to almost any future event - and the rewards can be enormous. It's not a "get rich today strategy" but "get rich tomorrow plan".
Combining the two we have our plan for success. A high count of quality content pages related to a future event - a surefire winner! Tony Cooper is editor of http://www.storebuilder.co.uk UK Guide to e-commerce
